Why the Energy Drink Industry Can't Quit Taurine

Taurine is in almost every energy drink on the shelf — usually around 1,000mg per can, sometimes tucked inside a bigger "energy blend" so you can't see the number at all. It's been there for nearly forty years. And if you ask the average person what it's doing, they'll tell you it "gives you energy," which is exactly backwards. Taurine isn't a stimulant. It doesn't wake you up. If anything, it does the opposite.

So why is it in everything? The answer is more revealing than the ingredient itself.

Taurine Doesn't Do What You Think

Taurine is an amino acid your body already makes and stores in your heart, brain, and muscles. You also get it from any normal diet with meat, fish, or dairy in it — enough that genuine deficiency is rare. It helps cells regulate fluid and supports cardiovascular function. Useful. Just not stimulating.

And despite the old myth, the taurine in your energy drink didn't come from a bull. It's synthesized in a lab — a manufactured version of the same molecule. Which raises the obvious question: if you already get plenty from food and it doesn't wake you up, why is a gram of it in your can?

It's There to Clean Up a Mess the Industry Made

Here's the part the category would rather not explain.

The caffeine in most energy drinks is also synthetic, and it's dosed high — Red Bull runs about 80mg per 8.4oz, Monster around 160mg per 16oz, and plenty of brands push 300mg. At those doses, synthetic caffeine hits hard and rough: the buzz, but also the jitters, the racing heart, the sense that your nervous system is running too hot. Taurine is the mop. As an amino acid, it increases the activity of calming neurotransmitters like GABA and glycine — which means it smooths out the rough edges of a caffeine dose that was too aggressive in the first place. Energy drink makers don't add taurine because it energizes you. They add it to make an over-caffeinated product feel less terrible.

Sit with that. The signature ingredient of the entire category exists to damage-control a different ingredient in the same can. It's not a feature. It's a patch.

The Science Just Got More Complicated

For years the defense of taurine was "it's natural, so who cares." That got harder to say in 2025.

Researchers at the University of Rochester's Wilmot Cancer Institute published a study in Nature showing that leukemia cells depend on taurine to fuel their growth — pulling it in from the surrounding bone-marrow environment to power their metabolism. We're going to be precise about what that means, because the precise version is the honest one: this does not mean taurine causes cancer, and it does not mean your energy drink gave anyone leukemia. The work is preclinical, in cells and mice, and the researchers' actual goal is to starve existing leukemia cells of taurine as a potential treatment.

But it does mean the tidy old story — "it's natural, load it in by the gram" — is no longer as tidy as the industry treated it. When the science on an ingredient is actively getting more complicated, dosing a gram of it into a daily-habit product on pure momentum starts to look less like formulation and more like inertia.

Why the Industry Can't Just Drop It

If taurine is a patch nobody can quite justify, why not quietly remove it? Because after forty years it has become part of the category's identity. Red Bull made taurine standard when it launched in 1987, and Monster, Rockstar, Bang and the rest copied the template until it was simply what an energy drink was.

So a brand dropping taurine today has to explain why — and any honest explanation sounds like a confession. Picture Red Bull announcing it's removing taurine. The immediate question would be: then why was it in there for forty years? What was it doing? And they can't answer that without admitting it was buffering the harshness of their own caffeine. Easier to leave it in and say nothing. So it stays, and every new entrant copies the same formula, because that's what the shelf looks like.

Or You Could Just Not Make the Mess

Here's the thing that makes this whole problem optional: you only need taurine to clean up harsh caffeine if you started with harsh caffeine.

Skip that, and the patch becomes unnecessary. Use a gentler source — green tea caffeine — at a moderate dose, structure the formula so it fits into a real day, and there's nothing to buffer. That's not a workaround. It's just not creating the problem in the first place.

That's how mōcean is built: 130mg of green tea caffeine, no taurine, and — the important part — no need for it. There's no rough edge to sand down, so there's no mop required. This Is What a Clean Slate Looks Like

The reason we can say all this is that we didn't inherit anyone's ingredient panel. Tony — a brewmaster with 36 years in beverage who helped formulate White Claw — built this on a whiteboard, ingredient by ingredient, each one earning its place or staying out. Nothing is in the can because "that's what energy drinks have." Taurine didn't make it in, because when you start from a blank sheet, a gram of metabolic buffer with an increasingly complicated research profile has to justify itself — and it couldn't.

That clean-slate approach shows up somewhere you can actually check: as of this writing, we haven't found an energy drink on shelf that scores higher than mōcean on Yuka, the independent app that grades products on ingredients and additives. mōcean sits at 69 out of 100 — in a category where most products land around 39. That gap isn't marketing. It's what happens when nothing goes in the can to cover for something else.

Taurine isn't poison, and we're not going to pretend it is — that's the kind of overclaiming we built mōcean to get away from. But it's a forty-year-old patch for a problem the industry chose to create, with a science profile that's getting murkier, not clearer. The easiest way to never worry about it is to drink something that was never designed to need it.
