Every energy drink on the shelf is formulated as though you're going to drink exactly one, once, at a moment of maximum need — like you've just been thawed out of cryosleep and have a crumbling building to escape. Maximum caffeine, every vitamin they can cram into the panel, enough sugar to make the result semi-drinkable. It's a product designed to raise you from the dead, sold to people who just need to get through a spreadsheet.
Here's the problem with that design: almost nobody drinks exactly one.
Who's Actually Drinking These
Not the cliff-diving athletes in the commercials. The real heavy users are considerably less photogenic and considerably more sleep-deprived.
Military personnel are the most documented group by a wide margin. A Walter Reed Army Institute of Research study of more than 1,000 soldiers and Marines deployed in Afghanistan found roughly 45% drank at least one energy drink a day, and about 14% drank three or more. A follow-up in Military Medicine tracking 627 infantry soldiers after a combat deployment found 75.7% had used energy drinks in the previous month, with 16.1% consistently drinking two or more daily. When the Army starts issuing guidance about a beverage, the pattern is real.
Then there's everyone else: college students during exam season, night-shift nurses and warehouse and factory workers, and gamers — a group energy drink brands court aggressively via esports sponsorships while selling them a product engineered to be consumed once.
All of these people are drinking two or three cans of something that was never designed to be drunk two or three times.
The Math Nobody Runs
Most energy drinks carry 100–300mg of caffeine per can. Call it 200mg average. Three of those is 600mg — before coffee, before tea, before the sad desk soda that gets you through 4 p.m.
For context, the FDA cites 400mg a day as an amount not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects in healthy adults. So the actual, well-documented consumption pattern lands people around 600mg while the reference point is 400 — and the industry's response has been to make the cans look cooler.
Research reviews on chronic overconsumption catalog what that looks like in practice, and it's not exotic: anxiety, insomnia, GI problems, disrupted sleep. Nothing on that list is a mystery. It's just what happens when you take a dose designed for one occasion and repeat it three times because your day required it.
Formulating for One Can Is a Choice
The single-dose design isn't a technical necessity. It's a marketing decision. Big caffeine numbers and "300% of your daily B12!" look impressive on a label, and they make the first sip feel powerful.
They also taste terrible. Vitamins at those doses go metallic, which requires sugar to mask, which requires sweeteners to offset, which produces the flavor profile the entire category shares — technically drinkable, if you've stopped expecting beverages to be enjoyable. The single-dose formulation isn't just a dosing problem. It's quietly why most energy drinks taste like a chore.
So We Did the Obvious Thing
We designed mōcean around how people actually drink energy drinks instead of how the marketing pretends they do.
Each can is 130mg of caffeine from organic green tea. Three of them is 390mg — which lands just under the FDA's 400mg reference point. That number is not a coincidence or a happy accident. It's the entire design constraint, worked backwards from the real behavior of real adults.
And we didn't leave it as a marketing claim. Look at the side of the can: DO NOT CONSUME MORE THAN 3 SERVINGS IN 24 HOURS. That's printed on every single one. Most brands would rather you didn't think about an upper limit at all, because an upper limit is a ceiling on how much you buy. We put ours in writing, because a design constraint you won't state out loud isn't a design constraint. It's a slogan.
We also dialed the B vitamins down — B12 sits at 25% of your daily value rather than the several-hundred-percent the category likes to advertise — which is a good part of why it tastes like something you'd choose rather than something you endure. Fewer label fireworks, better beverage. The Point
Adults have twelve- and fourteen-hour days. You need energy in the morning, attention in the afternoon, and something left for the evening. One enormous hit of caffeine at 8 a.m. doesn't solve that — it relocates the problem to 11, when the crash lands and you open a second can the product was never designed for.
Designing for two to three is just the obvious response to how the thing is actually used, by the actual people using it. It only requires caring about that more than the numbers on the label. The Mandarin and the Blueberry Pom were both built to that spec.
